About Water Pumps

What do they do?

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to maintain the correct operating temperature. A failed water pump causes rapid overheating which can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket.

When to replace

If driven by the timing belt, replace at the same time as the belt (every 60,000–125,000 miles). Electric water pumps typically last longer but can fail suddenly. Symptoms include overheating, coolant leaks from the pump weep hole, and a whining noise.

Brand guide

SKF, Gates, and Dayco supply OEM water pumps. Many timing belt kits include a water pump. For cars with known plastic impeller issues (e.g. BMW, VW), aftermarket metal impeller pumps are available.

💡 Top tip: Always replace the coolant and thermostat when fitting a new water pump. Old coolant may have lost its anti-corrosion properties, and a sticking thermostat can put extra strain on the new pump.

⚠️ Known Ford Focus Issues

Thermostat housing cracking

The plastic thermostat housing on 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines can crack and leak coolant. Relatively cheap part but overheating risk if ignored.

Parts tip: The Focus shares many components with the C-Max and Kuga, so parts availability is excellent and prices are competitive. Generic aftermarket parts work well for routine servicing.
