About Suspension Arms

What do they do?

Suspension arms (wishbones, control arms) connect the wheel hub to the car's body and control wheel movement. The rubber bushes in the arms are usually the first part to wear, causing play and knocking.

When to replace

Bushes typically last 60,000–100,000 miles. Symptoms include clunking over bumps, vague steering, uneven tyre wear, and play when the car is jacked up. Bushes can often be replaced separately, but some arms require complete replacement.

Brand guide

Lemförder (TRW) is the top OEM supplier for European cars. Meyle and Febi offer good quality aftermarket options. For BMW and Mercedes, always use at least OEM-equivalent quality.

💡 Top tip: After replacing suspension arms, always get a four-wheel alignment done. The new components will change the geometry, and incorrect alignment causes rapid tyre wear.

⚠️ Known Ford Focus Issues

Rear suspension knocking

The rear trailing arm bushes wear out, especially on Mk2 and Mk3 models. Often misdiagnosed as shock absorbers — check bushes first before replacing shocks.

Parts tip: The Focus shares many components with the C-Max and Kuga, so parts availability is excellent and prices are competitive. Generic aftermarket parts work well for routine servicing.
